The Glamoury is a professional makeup and hair salon in Vancouver, B.C. that takes a contemporary approach to beauty, where classic and timeless meets modern and magical. AJ Woodworth is the brains and beauty behind The Glamoury and has transformed her spaces in both Yaletown and most recently Parq Vancouver into sophisticated salons featuring gold accents and tropical-inspired selfie walls. Thanks AJ’s continuous hustle and with support from the gorgeous girls on her team, she has been able to successfully open two locations and launch her own makeup line!
What does babes supporting babes mean to you?
To me, it means encouraging women in whatever way possible in an effort to build and support one another vs. competing.
If you could choose your nickname, what would it be?
Well my name is already a nick name! But my friends often call me “Age” which is funny because it’s technically longer.
What’s your spirit animal?
A wiener dog. Determined yet spunky.
What’s your proudest babe moment or achievement?
I would say opening The Glamoury and more specifically recently forming a partnership with the JW Marriott Parq.
What’s the most unexpected thing you have in your purse or wallet?
Ohhhhhhh my purse is bad, it’s literally the Bermuda triangle. Dog food probably!
Tell us about a time where you were faced with a situation that you could have been unkind, but chose to be a babe instead?
When I started The Glamoury, someone copied my ideas, which made me really upset. While I wanted to reach out and say something, I did have the grounds to do so, I realized that the negative energy was taking away from all the positive things that were happening. I also feel strongly there’s enough room for everyone so I decided to let it go and I wish them the best.
What product would you seriously stockpile if you found out they weren’t selling it anymore?
Embryollise Lait-Crème Concentrate! It’s a primer, mask, moisturizer, and makeup remover. Clearly I’m a big fan!
If you had a yacht, what would be the name of it?
Piece of Ship.
What was the best piece of advice you received when you were first starting your career?
My business coach Susan Washington always told me to not be scared of the unknown. As much as you can put a solid plan together, things always change and it’s really important to adapt, as scary as it may be.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received now that you’re in your career?
Don’t look at your business from a day-to-day standpoint. You need to look at growth from year to year which is a very difficult thing to do. I continue to struggle with that.
Red, white, or rose?
I want it all!
When I dance I look like….
Elaine Benes.
Who do you channel when you’re about to do something that scares you?
I channel my mom and dad because they built their business from nothing.
What’s your favourite destination to visit?
I have a cabin on an island called Buccaneer Bay. It’s basically a cabin on a beach and it’s perfect!
What’s your favourite meal to eat?
I’m not saying this to try to come off as healthy but I love a good salad with croutons. Pizza is a very close second!
What’s the most fulfilling part of your career?
Seeing women feel good about themselves but also feeling good about myself. While entrepreneurship can be terrifying, at the end of the day the reward of seeing something you’ve created come to fruition is such an incredible feeling.
Where’s your favourite place to draw inspiration from?
Everday women. I love having real conversations with people because it’s so easy to get caught up in the Instagram world where everything looks so perfect.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Wine and movie theatre popcorn. 100%!
What quality are you working on yourself right now?
Trying to be more of a morning person! And also trying to say ‘100%’ a little less!
What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome in business?
Having to motivate the team when it’s a slow month or when you don’t feel motivated yourself. However, it’s these special women who really motivate me to keep pushing boundaries because I know that I have them by my side and for that, I’m very lucky!
Coffee meeting or drinks meeting?
Drinks!
If you’re going out for a cocktail you’d order…
Prosecco. Can that be considered a cocktail?
If you had unlimited budget for 2 hours of shopping where would you go?
Nordstrom Vancouver then upstairs to see Brunette! I’m obsessed with my girls leisure suit!
What’s your favorite movie?
Love Actually is high up on the list.
